Introduction To The Course
What Does Our Trailer Competency Cover?
In November 2021, the government abolished the requirement to sit a driving test to achieve your BE (car and trailer) licence. All car drivers are now able to drive vehicles and trailers to a Maximum Authorised Mass of 7,500kgs combined.
Our Trailer Competency course is suitable for drivers who are towing trailers or caravans of all sizes with cars, vans or other commercial vehicles.

Trailer Competency Licence Details
You must have a Category B (Car) licence to attend this course. All experience levels are welcome.
We are able to supply our vehicle and trailer, or alternatively you may wish to provide your own.
Our Car & Trailer / Caravan Competency course is typically run over 1 day (approx. 5hrs) on a 1-to-1 basis. We are also able to train in pairs if preferred, typically over a 7.5hr duration.
The course can be tailored to suit your requirements. The format is typically split between some yard-based exercises and on-road driving, and will usually follow:
- Vehicle and Trailer Pre Use Checks
- Safe Coupling and Uncoupling
- Reversing Exercises and Techniques
- Improving On-Road Driving Abilities
There is no formal assessment.
Instead, we will observe your competency throughout the day, and provide a certification of completion.
Courses can be run from our driver training centre in South Wales, or from your premises if preferred.
Upon completion you will be issued with a certificate to show you have completed basic training. Whilst there is no set expiry date, we advise Refresher training every 5 years in line with HSE recommendations.
If you own or manage a large fleet of trailers, we are able to help with bespoke trailer training courses to suit your requirements. This can cover a variety of trailer categories, such as:
- Car + Trailer (B+E)
- 7.5 Tonne + Trailer (C1+E)
- Minibus + Trailer (D1+E)
