PCV D1 (Minibus) Driver Training

What Is A Category D1 Licence?

Category D1 will allow licence holders to drive Minibuses with up to 16 passenger seats.

You can take your D1 test at the age of 18, providing that you already have a car licence.

Drivers who passed their car test prior to 01 January 1997 were automatically issued a D1 entitlement with a 101 restriction code – “not for hire or reward.” The only way to lift this restriction is by completing the PCV D1 practical driver training and test.

Entry Requirements

Before practical training, you will need to:

  • complete a medical assessment in order to apply for your provisional licence
  • pass the relevant PCV theory tests

We are able to arrange these elements for you as part of our PCV Starter Pack.

The Course

Our PCV D1 driver training course is typically completed on a 2-to-1 basis over 2 full days, returning for your practical test on the third and final day.

Throughout your course, we will:

  • Introduce you to the vehicle
  • Correct your driving style ready for your practical test
  • Complete the reverse exercise training and assessment
  • Demonstrate the “show me, tell me” questions you will need to know

The practical driving test is made up of two parts:

Module 3A: an ‘S shaped’ reverse exercise into a loading bay. During your driver training course, you’ll practice this exercise at our private reversing area.

Module 3B: a 60-minute on-the-road drive. This will be conducted by a DVSA driving examiner at the end of your practical training course.

Driver CPC

If you intend on using your LGV licence professionally (i.e. use your licence for work purposes/to be paid as a driver), you will need to complete your PCV Driver CPC qualification.

You can read more about Driver CPC and the exemptions by clicking here.

For additional peace of mind, some customers wish to invest our Pass Protection insurance, priced at £395 including VAT.

This entitles you to 2 x Module 3A Retests (reverse exercise) and 2 x Module 3B Retests (on-road test), worth £878.
