PCV D (Bus) Driver Training

What is a Category D licence?

PCV Category D is a passenger carrying vehicle with more than 16 passenger seats.

The PCV D entitlement will also allow you to drive coaches, double-decker and bendi buses.

You can take your category D test at the age of 18, providing that you already hold a category B (car) driving licence. You do not need to have held your licence for a certain period of time.

Entry Requirements

Before practical training, you will need to:

  • complete a medical assessment in order to apply for your provisional licence
  • pass the relevant PCV theory tests

We are able to arrange these elements for you as part of our PCV Starter Pack.

The Course

Our category D driver training course is typically completed on a 1-to-1 basis over 2 full days, returning for your practical test on the third and final day.

We use fully automatic vehicles for training purposes. By passing in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, you will still be issued a full manual PCV entitlement. We carefully source our training vehicles to ensure your driver training is as easy as possible.

Throughout your course, we will:

  • Introduce you to the vehicle
  • Build your confidence driving large passenger carrying vehicles
  • Correct your driving style in preparation for your driving test
  • Complete the reverse exercise training and assessment
  • Practice the “show me, tell me” questions you will be asked at the start of your test

The practical driving test is made up of two parts:

  • Module 3A: an ‘S shaped’ reverse exercise into a loading bay. During your driver training course, you’ll practice this exercise at our private reversing area, and we’ll test you when you feel confident.
  • Module 3B: a 60-minute on-the-road drive. A DVSA driving examiner will conduct this at the end of your practical training course. You will take your test on the same roads that you train on.

Driver CPC

If you intend on using your LGV licence professionally (i.e. use your licence for work purposes/to be paid as a driver), you will need to complete your PCV Driver CPC qualification.

Pass Protection

For additional peace of mind, some customers wish to invest our Pass Protection insurance, priced at £395 including VAT.

This entitles you to 2 x Module 3A Retests (reverse exercise) and 2 x Module 3B Retests (on-road test), worth £878.

Free Accommodation

If you are travelling more than 70 miles then you will qualify for Free Accommodation in a local Premier Inn.
