About the licence
LGV CE (Class 1) licence is required if you wish to drive large goods vehicles over 7,500kgs MAM, with a trailer exceeding 750kgs.
By gaining your LGV CE entitlement, you will also unlock Car & Trailer (BE) entitlement if you do not hold it already. The CE entitlement will also allow you to drive draw-bar trailers.
You must already hold an LGV C (Class 2) licence before you are able to complete your LGV CE (Class 1) driver training and test. You do not need to have held this qualification for a certain period of time.
You can read more about the LGV C (Class 2) course that we offer by clicking here.
We run a five day course including practical test. Courses are typically run at a 2-to-1 ratio – two trainees with one instructor. Although driving time is shared, you will remain in the vehicle all day ensuring you are familiar with the test routes. We are also able to offer 1-to-1 training if preferred.
Please note: due to COVID-19, all driver training for the foreseeable future will be conducted on a 1-to-1 basis.
At Heads of the Valleys Training, we use fully automatic LGV’s for training purposes. By passing in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, you will still be issued a full manual LGV C entitlement.
Our LGV CE driver training is completed using a conventional tractor unit and trailer combination, as opposed to a draw-bar trailer. Our vehicles have been carefully sourced and selected, to ensure your driver training is as straight forward as possible.
The practical test will last around 60 minutes and is made up of four parts – a few brief safety questions, a reverse manoeuvre, a trailer uncouple and recouple exercise and a practical on-the-road driving assessment.
At Heads of the Valleys Training we have our own private DVSA test facility on site, meaning that your practical test would start and finish from our centre. This provides a huge advantage as you will be taking your test within the local area where you will have been training throughout the duration of your course. It also means that you can practice the tricky reverse exercise at our centre each day that you are training – the same place you will be completing it on your test.
Please note that if you intend on using your LGV licence professionally (i.e. use your licence for work purposes/to be paid as a driver), you must hold a valid Driver CPC qualification. You can read more about this by clicking here.
