The IPAF MEWP Spotter Training Course is designed to provide candidates with a clear understanding of the Spotter’s role in supporting safe powered access operations.

Acting as an essential “second set of eyes,” the MEWP Spotter helps guide the equipment, monitor the surroundings, and communicate effectively with the operator, particularly in environments where visibility is restricted or hazards are present.

Delivered via flexible eLearning, this course covers key areas including hazard awareness, safe positioning, communication methods, exclusion zones and emergency procedures. It is suitable for anyone involved in MEWP operations, from ground staff assisting movements through to supervisors and managers responsible for site safety, ensuring a consistent and safe approach across the team.

Course Technical Details

IPAF MEWP Spotter Course Licence Details

This course is designed for anyone required to assist a MEWP Operator in safely manoeuvring equipment, particularly where visibility is restricted.

It is also recommended for MEWP Operators, supervisors and site managers who need to understand the Spotters’ role, communication methods and safe positioning on site.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

A basic level of English is required, along with access to a device with an internet connection. A laptop, PC or tablet is advised.

You do not need to hold any prior MEWP operator qualifications or IPAF certificates to attend.

Assessment is completed online via a multiple-choice theory test consisting of 20 questions. A minimum pass mark of 80% is required.

Candidates who do not achieve a pass will be given up to two further attempts.

This is an eLearning course and can be completed remotely at a time and place to suit you.

The IPAF MEWP Spotter course content covers:

  • Introduction to the MEWP Spotter role and responsibilities
  • Understanding different MEWP types and operating characteristics
  • Hazard awareness, including overhead obstructions, ground conditions and moving vehicles
  • Identifying blind spots and high-risk areas around MEWPs
  • Safe positioning of the Spotter during operations
  • Standard hand signals and effective communication methods
  • Use of radios and verbal communication protocols
  • Creating and maintaining safe working and exclusion zones
  • Planning movements and coordinating with the MEWP Operator
  • Guiding MEWPs in confined or complex environments
  • Supporting safe loading, unloading and positioning of equipment
  • Understanding legal duties and responsibilities on-site
  • Emergency procedures and response actions
  • Pre-operation checks, risk assessments and safe systems of work

Successful candidates will receive an IPAF MEWP Spotter certificate. This is accessible via the IPAF ePAL app.

The qualification is valid for 5 years, after which candidates must complete the full course again to renew it.
