HGV & PCV Driving Test Pass Rates

hgv driving test pass rate

Many aspiring HGV and PCV drivers can be initially anxious about embarking on learning a new skill. Naturally, this means we regularly get asked the question: What is the pass rate for lorry and bus practical tests?

This is a crucial question to ask any training provider you’re considering, as it ensures you’re making an informed choice before investing your hard-earned money. In this article, we’ll explore the latest statistics and reveal what makes Heads of the Valleys Training stand out from the competition!

What Is The UK National Average Pass Rate?

According to the latest DVSA statistics released in 2023:

  • the national average pass rate for lorry (HGV) driving tests is 59.7%.
  • the national average rate for bus and minibus (PCV) driving tests is marginally higher at 65.4%.

As a leading provider of both HGV training and PCV training, we believe these figures are relatively low when compared to the consistently higher pass rates achieved by our trainees.

What Is Heads of the Valleys Training Pass Rate?

In 2024, our overall pass rate was a sector-leading 86.8%, across a total of 577 tests conducted. In addition, an average of 2.6 driving faults (sometimes known as “minors”) were accrued on every test.

To break down our pass rates even further, below are our trainee’s results by each type of driver training:

Due to our impressive pass rates, we are often asked why the pass rate at Heads of the Valleys Training is so much higher than the UK national average.

We believe the answer to this lies within a few different areas:

  • Our fantastic team of expert instructors, who have a plethora of experience and knowledge from many years spent both behind the wheel and in the instructor seat. Our driver trainers are here to get you through the test but also to make you feel relaxed and ensure you have an enjoyable experience while learning.
  • Our modern fleet of training vehicles, most of which have been sourced from new, are selected purely with training in mind. We specify our vehicles to make your driver training as easy and comfortable as possible.
  • Our private DVSA test facility allows us to conduct both off-road (Module 3A) and on-road (Module 3B) driving tests on-site, as well as having our admin team and classroom facilities all under one roof. We also offer free accommodation for anyone travelling more than 70 miles!
  • Our incredible admin and support team always go the extra mile to ensure your training journey is seamless.

“Guaranteed Pass”

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a guaranteed pass – be careful what you read online!

For the 60 minutes of on-road driving test, the onus is on you to show the examiner your safe driving abilities and become the proud owner of a blue certificate and new HGV or PCV entitlement.

Pass Protection

Some providers, such as ourselves, offer a Pass Protection product that acts as an insurance policy in case you need a retest.

An HGV retest can typically cost in the region of £350 to £500, but our Pass Protection gives you up to 2 x practical retests for a one-off cost of £395. This must be taken out before you begin your practical driver training.
